Different Types of Fashionable Handbag

A handbag is an fashion accessory now carried primarily by women and girls to hold such item as money, credit card and cosmetics. The word is often shortened to bag and also called a purse or pocket bag. Luggage and handbags serve many of the same purposes and are not easy to separate. In this work, luggage is listed as a separate category and considered to be a container designed to carry the belongings of a traveler. Bags in which is to carry things have probably been used as a basic tool since prehistoric times and in all civilizations. The oldest mummified body ever found enact was that of a man who was carrying a leather pouch. From the 13th to 16th c. in Europe, a small leather pouch was worn suspended from a men’s belt in order to have money for charity readily available. By the late 19th c. various types of handbags began to carried mainly for traveling. By the 1920s, a handbag become a necessary accessory for a women. In 1968s, the man bag, a handbag for men was introduced.
Different Types of Fashionable Handbags:
1. Accordion Bag :
Bag made like an expandable filing envelope that is narrow at the top and pleated at sides and bottom. Usually made with a handle and frequently with a zipper compartment in the center.
2. Barrel Bag :
Handbag shaped like a stubby cylinder with a zipper closing and handles attached to the sides.
3. Basket Bag :
Applies to many types of handbags. Originally woven only of reed in typical basket shapes. Now made of reed, straw, cane, interwoven plastic strips or other materials such as leather or plastic in the shape of a basket.
4. Beaded Bag :
Any ornate small bag covered with varicolored pearls or glass beads or a fabric bag, often satin , with a design worked in beads.
5. Belt Bag :
A small bag worn at waist having slots in the back through which a belt is drawn. Usually has a flap closing and is worn with sportswear. A pouch bag with handle through which a belt is drawn.
6. Book Bag :
Slim oblong bag the size of notebook cinched around center with strap that forms loop handle.
7. Box Bag :
Handbag with rigid frame, similar to small suitcase or lunchbox, made in leather, metal or vinyl.
8. Bracelet Bag :
Type of hand bag with one or two BANFLE BRACELETS as handles. It may be a soft pouch made of leather or fabric or may be made with a frame.
9. Briefcase Bag :
Large, usually flat case with a carrying handle, most often made of real or synthetic leather and is large enough or can expand sufficiently to hold documents, books and the like. Also called attaché case. Handbag of briefcase size for woman executive that features small outside pockets for personal items.
10. Bucket Bag :
Round handbag made in the shape of a bucket.
11. Canteen Bag :
Circular style bag frequently made with a shoulder strap and zipper closing. Made in the shape of a flat canteen used to carry water in dry climates.
12. Carpet Bag :
Hand bag made of patterned carpeting or heavy tapestry in a large satchel style. Popular in 19th c, late 1980s in lighter weight fabrics.
13. Chanel Bag :
Handbag designed by French couturiers Gabrielle Chanel that has become a classic. Of quilted leather with gold chain handles, it has a gold house of Chanel logo on the front.
14. Clutch bag/clutch purse :
Regular sized handbag without a handle. A fine gold chain attached in such a manner that it is of optional use.
15. Cord Bag :
Any type of handbag made out of a fabric composed of rows of GIMP stitched to a background fabric to make a pattern.
16. Doctor’s Bag :
Large handbag shaped like the bag traditionally carried by a physician. It has two handles, one on either side of hinged top opening.
17. Greek Bag :
Square or rectangular wool open-top bag. Hand woven in Greek-key designs, timed around edge with cable yarn that also forms the handle.
18. Hatbox Bag :
Handbag made to look like a hatbox.
19. Kelly Bag :
Handbag favored by the Princess Grace of Monaco in the 1950s.
20. Lunchbox Bag :
Identical in shape to the traditional deep lunchbox with a curved lid. Introduced from Italy in1967, this handbag was first made in papier-mâché and later in metal.
21. Man Bag :
Handbag, usually a shoulder bag style or with a wrist strap, that is carried by a man. A fashion that gained in popularity in early 1970s as an outgrowth of the wide use of camera bags by men.
22. Mesh Bag :
Tiny links of metal joined to make a flexible bag. The links may be white or colored enamel with matching plastic frames.
23. Messenger Bag :
Large bag with an envelope-like main compartment that usually closes with a zipper has a large flap over the front that fastens with a buckle or snap. May have either shoulder straps or handles. Inspired by bags carried by messengers.
24. Mini Bag :
Small bags that became important in the 1960s with the introduction of miniskirts. Tiny bags were introduced in all styles. Some had double and triple frames, usually with attached shoulder chains or straps.
25. Muff Bag :
Basically a muff an accessory used to keep the hands warm, frequently styled in fur . A zippered compartment to hold small items was added to the muff, and this became a classic item used by little girls.
26. News Bag :
Toto bag style with separate section on the outside to slip in a rolled magazine or newspaper.
27. Pannier Bag :
A bag with zipper compartment in the center and two open compartments on either side. A single broad handle extends from one side to the other on the outside of the bag at the middle.
28. Pouch Bag :
Basic style originally made of soft shirred leather or fabric with a drawstring closing. Now also made with a frame and handles.
29. Signature Bag :
Handbag of leather or canvas with designer’s initials or signature stenciled or printed in an allover repeat pattern.
30. Tote Bag:
Utility Bag large enough to carry small packages, sometimes with inner zippered compartment for money. Copied from shape of common paper shopping bag. Made with open top and two handles, sometimes with outside loop to hold umbrella. Any large bag with open top and two handles.
