Pucker is a wrinkled appearance along a seam in an otherwise smooth fabric. It generally appears as if there is too much fabric and not enough thread in the seam. It is one of the most frequently occurring sewing defects on fabric.

This is the reason why sewing thread is often blamed for causing puckering through there are other factors as well for promotion of puckering. They are given below:

  • Fabric structure
  • Seam construction
  • Needle size
  • Material feeding problem
  • Wrong thread tensions
  • Unsuitable thread

The six reasons and prevention’s of seam puckering:

Puckering may be visible as soon as sewing is complete but some appear later when the garments is ironed or washed. Fabrics from synthetic fibers generally has a tendency to show up puckering.

A puckering is the most frequently occurring sewing defects and commonest of all defects. It influence sewing quality and create bad appearance on garments. The problem was seriously investigated by researchers who found six reasons of puckering. These are below…….

Reasons of puckering:

  1. Puckering due to differential fabric stretch
  2.  Puckering due to differential fabric dimensional instability
  3. Puckering due to tension of sewing thread
  4. Puckering due to shrinkage of sewing machine
  5. Puckering due to structural jamming
  6. Puckering due to unmatched pattern

Prevention’s of puckering:

  1. Use suitable feed mechanism
  2. Use suitable feed mechanism and take more care during sewing
  3. Remove thread tension
  4. Use synthetic sewing thread
  5. Use suitable fabric or thread
  6. Change or rectify pattern
