Types of Yoke Application on Dress

A yoke is a shaped pattern piece which forms part of a garment, usually fitting around the neck, arm hole and shoulders, or around the hips to provide support for looser parts of the garment, such as a gathered skirt, nighty, children wear and the body of a shirt. Yoke construction was first seen in the 19th century.
Types of Yoke:
There are many types of yoke that use in different dress pattern for design. Some types of yoke are as follows:
- Round Yoke
- Straight Yoke
- Square Yoke
- Triangular Yoke
- Saddle Yoke
- Pointed Yoke
- Asymmetrical Yoke
- U- Yoke
Types of yoke application on dress are given below:
1. Round Yoke:
Usually found in children and ladies garments of casual and formal wear. It starts from the deepest part of the arm hole. Found on Frocks, Gowns, and Nighties.
2. Straight Yoke:
It has straight yoke line and is rectangular in shape. It is found in ladies and children garments. The yoke starts from the deepest part of arm hole.
3. Square Yoke:
Found in ladies garments of casual and formal wear. It starts from the arm hole or the shoulder line.
4. Triangular Yoke:
Found in ladies garments of formal wear such as Nighty and Gowns. The yoke line may start from the arm hole or the shoulders.
5. Saddle Yoke:
It is usually found on the back of men’s shirts. The yoke is one piece in the front and the back. It usually has pleats or gathers below. It can even be cut on the off grain.
6. Pointed Yoke:
It is modified form of Triangular Yoke. The yoke has a slit in the center forming a V alphabet of the yoke line. It’s found in men’s Shirts and ladies Night wear.
7. Asymmetrical Yoke:
As the name suggests, it has no definite shape and size. It is found in weird and punk dresses.
8. U- Yoke:
Its form is like the shape of alphabet U. It has a few gather or pleats below. It is found in ladies and children garments of casual wear. It starts form the middle of the shoulder lines.
